James Gunn reflected on shooting the last-ever scene with all the primary cast of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
For nearly a decade, James Gunn has been attached to the lovable cosmic misfits of the MCU known as the Guardians of the Galaxy. The once-obscure team has since gone on to become household names, thanks to two successful standalone films, as well as multiple appearances in other MCU properties, including two Avengers films and most recently, Thor: Love and Thunder.
After a tumultuous journey, James Gunn has jumped from the DC Extended Universe and back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe to realize his vision for the conclusion of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. Gunn has admitted to having quite a close connection to both the cast of the films, as well as to the characters themselves, which serves as an important inspiration to his writing process, and when asked about how that factors into his creative process, he tweeted the following:
That said, shooting the last-ever scene with all the Guardians for Vol 3 was emotional for all of us. There were a lot of tears. And it wasn’t just for the characters.
James Gunn’s comments here reflect on the ongoing narrative that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be the most emotional film of the entire trilogy so far. As someone who attended San Diego Comic-Con for the Hall H Marvel Studios presentation, I had a chance to see the early teaser for the film, and whether it’s the ongoing narrative for the team, or especially in how the film teases its exploration into Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and his origins, the film looks to pull at viewers’ heartstrings quite a bit. And knowing that Gunn and the Guardians team were extremely emotional filming the final scene together is quite interesting to hear.
Before they return for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, James Gunn’s lovable misfits recently appeared in Thor: Love and Thunder. Here is the synopsis:
The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.
Directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, the Thor solo film stars Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Jaimie Alexander, Taika Waititi, Russell Crowe, Natalie Portman, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper.
Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder is now playing in theaters. Meanwhile, James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit theaters on May 5, 2023.
