Strange things happened in Aiken last weekend.
Comedian Aaron Murray went viral after he wore a South Aiken High School Thoroughbreds T-shirt in an episode of the Netflix show “Stranger Things.” Following the popularity of the scene, Murray decided to hold a comedy show in Aiken to benefit the drama department at South Aiken High School.
The sold-out show was held Friday, Aug. 19, at Amentum Center for the Performing Arts where Murray performed with comedians Jimmy Fontaine and Alyx Libby. He said everything went “phenomenally well.”
“The show itself was amazing,” Murray said. “My buddy Steve Peters started off the show making the announcements in a funny way. Alyx Libby hosted and she did a great job. Then my buddy Jimmy Fontaine featured and he did phenomenal and then I headlined.”
When Murray went to do the question and answer portion of the show, he said Libby came running out saying there was a surprise for him.
“The Mayor of Aiken (Rick Osbon) came out and presented me with a key to the city,” Murray said.
He wasn’t totally surprised about the key to the city because before the show someone messaged him that he was going to get a surprise, but he said he didn’t know what it was.
“People had joked about the key to the city, but I was thinking a certificate, a thank you of sort,” Murray said. “I’ve never seen a key to the city, let alone been handed one. … I truly don’t have it to put into words. I can’t imagine how much time and effort it took to get this thing made. I imagine they don’t have them just laying in a box … when he handed it to me I was like which door does this open.”
The show also featured special T-shirts that were created solely for the event. However, because of their popularity, Murray is working with Carolina Screenprint for more of the shirts to be printed. Those who would like to purchase one can by going to https://carolinascreenprint.com/t/adam-murray. The cost for the shirts start at $20, with adult 2X, adult 3X, and 4X being $22.
The comedy show wasn’t the only appearance Murray made while in Aiken. On Thursday, Aug. 18, he held a meet and greet at South Aiken where he signed autographs, T-shirts were sold and an episode of “Stranger Things” was watched. Money from this event went to the athletic boosters cub, according to a Facebook post from the South Aiken High School Booster Club.
“I got there at 5:30 p.m. because they wanted me to get there before everyone else did to check out the layout, but there were already a ton of people there,” he said. “…(Principal Sam Fuller’s) idea was people would walk in, get a picture and walk into (the gym to) watch the episode I’m in. I was there from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. just signing autographs and taking photos. The moment I came up in the episode everyone in the gym just started screaming.”
Not only did Murray sign autographs for humans, he also signed a puppy that was wearing a Hawkins basketball jersey.
On Saturday, Aug. 20, Murray participated in another fundraiser for the school at South on Whiskey, which featured a Lowcountry boil and minigolf. This event raised several hundred dollars, according to a Facebook post from South on Whiskey.
Between all the events, $14,000 was raised for South Aiken High School, according to a Facebook post from the school.
“I’ve never seen a key to the city, let alone been handed one. … I truly don’t have it to put into words. I can’t imagine how much time and effort it took to get this thing made. I imagine they don’t have them just laying in a box … when he handed it to me I was like which door does this open.”
